Preposition atau kata depan yaitu kata yang biasanya ditempatkan sebelum noun atau pronoun; menunjukkan hubungan antara noun dan pronoun itu dengan kata-kata lain dalam kalimat atau bisa dikatakan juga preposition adalah kata yang digunakan untuk menghubungkan kata benda yang berbeda. Kata-kata yang termasuk dalam preposition antara lain : at, in, on, about, under, of, to, for dan lain sebagainya

A preposition is used to show direction, location, or time, or to introduce an object.

In English, some prepositions are short, mostly containing six letters or fewer. There are, however, many multi-word prepositions. Throughout the history of the English language, new prepositions have come into use, old ones have fallen out of use, and the meanings of existing prepositions have changed. The prepositions generally remain a closed class.

Dalam fungsinya sebagai penunjuk tempat atau posisi, Preposition “at, on, in” sering kali tertukar posisi, karena dalam Bahasa Indonesia ketiganya memiliki terjemahan yang sama, “di”.

·                     At digunakan untuk menunjukkan alamat lengkap.

Contoh :

       I live at 15DewiSartika Street.

Sayatinggal di Jl. DewiSartika No. 15

·                     On digunakan jika alamat yang di sampaikan hanyalah nama jalan.

Contoh :

Dalam fungsi menunjukkan waktu, Preposisi “at, on, dan in” memiliki arti yang sama dalam Bahasa Indonesia, yaitu “pada”. Namun demikian, dalam tatabahasa Inggris, ketiganya memiliki tugas yang berbeda.

·                     At dipakai untuk menunjukkan jam.

Contoh :

        The class begins at 8 o’clock.

Preposisi-preposisi di atas bersifat umum, bisa digunakan sesuai dengan konteks yang diperlukan. Namun dalam Bahasa Inggris, ada beberapa Preposisi yang sifatnya terikat (bounded) atau menempel pada kata kerja (verb) atau kata sifat (adjective) tertentu.

Contoh :

Believe = in 

I believe in you. (benar)

Akupercayapadamu

Dalam Contoh kalimat diatas, in adalah preposisi terikat dari believe, sehingga in tidak boleh diganti dengan yang lain. Namun demikian, beberapa Verb dan Adjective dapat memiliki lebih dari satu Bounded Preposition.
